Historically, portrait paintings have primarily memorialized the rich and powerful. Over time, however, it also became common for the middle-class to commission portraits of their families. The genre family portrait generally expresses the patriarchal values of the bourgeois family.

The installation work dismantles both the genre family portrait and the idea of the contemporary family as a valuable unity.
